Two-Thousand-Eleven

It's safe to say 2011 was the most eventful year of my life.

On 02/11/2011 I married my best friend in the Salt Lake City Temple.

We immediately began a year of travel.

To Florida, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Mexico...

Then to the Carolinas, New Jersey and NYC...

We made it to Coney Island, Chicago and Jackson Hole...

Vacationing with our families, literally from coast to coast.

We celebrated new friendships.

And renewed old ones...

We experienced joy.

And pain.

We took leaps.... and at times we crashed and burned. ;)

But life goes on.

We had plenty of laughs.

And we did many new things.

And had quite a few 'firsts.'

Our first married year was full of ups and downs, trials and tribulations, happiness and hope, prayers and progress. Yet I wouldn't have it anyother way. So here's to 2011. And an even better 2012!

Happy New Year!

Spoiled...

I'm feeling so blessed lately. That and a little bit spoiled...

It seems this whole month I've been spoiled- with presents, gift cards and plenty of treats. With a new husband and and a second family this year, I've been showered in more gifts than I could imagine.

A couple weeks ago Jason got so sick of his phone he made a beeline for AT&T and bought us each iphones. I had very little complaints about my android, but the idea of saving $100 each month and having an iphone sounded too good to pass up. Seriously, our T-Mobile bill was out of control. I'm not crazy about my phone just yet, but maybe it'll grow on me. I will say that I'm thrilled about the lightning fast internet and Instagram app to share pics. They've got some awesome photo editing apps I never knew about!

With all those iphone-shattering horror stories I got to work ordering cases ASAP. Jason got a neat wood-grain one and I got a cute leopard one. With cases, screen protectors and AppleCare, we should be covered for a while.

Speaking of Apple, my Dad bought everyone 32g ipod touches for Christmas! He asked Jace and I if we wanted ipods or gift cards a month or so ago and we chose the gift cards since we already have two ipods. But dad's had some deep pockets this year so he got us ipods and an Olive Garden and Target gift card for me and an Outback and Best Buy gift card for Jace, plus two itunes gift cards and Petco and Petsmart gift card for our baby. ;)  My dad believes in equality, I told Jace. Even if it means two gift cards for Ollie. If earbuds would stay in puppydog ears I'm sure he'd give Ollie an ipod too. :) That and he loves Ollie to death. I can't imagine how he's gonna be when we have kids. :P

So Jace and I have already figured it out. We'll sell our old-generation ipods and use the new ones for workouts and the car, then our iphones can keep limited music on them (and more space for pics) for home and school. See what I mean? I'm spoiled!

Before we went to Vegas and Ogden for Christmas with our families, Jace and I made sure to have a Christmas of our own- under our own tree, in our own little home- something we want to do every year. We both opened two presents, Jason surprising me with a little something from VS and new Miss Me's. :)

On Christmas Day he continued to spoil me with a new Guess wallet- my cheap Forever21 clutch was falling apart badly, along with Water for Elephants, a new school bag, (purple and so cute!) new slippers and the Now 40 CD. One of the first CDs I ever had was Now 4, that's crazy!

I wish I had pics to post from each of our Christmas parties, but our laptops are in the shop so I'll have to post those later. That and Halloween, (ohmygosh I still haven't blogged about Halloween!) the Tippetts party in Payson, our time in Ogden and Becky's baby shower. Anyways, Becky and Ben gave Jace and I a movie night package complete with treats for us and pupperoni for Ollie. Then Deb surprised me with The Help and a VS gift card, where I promptly headed to the closest Vegas mall to get new yoga pants, lipgloss and this holiday edition eye pallette.

Joel and Preston got me new brushes so I'm super excited to break into my new makeup. Even with all those gifts I got money from my grandparents and Larissa and an Applebee's gift card from my Aunt. One of the last gifts we opened was another big one from my dad- AppleTV to stream movies, shows, photos, youtube, music, etc. straight from our apple devices. All seven of them.Holycrap!

I feel so blessed to have all these gifts come my way! Larissa and I used to set up everything we got for Christmas- lay it all out pose it for the camera, and this Christmas I feel like I got so much I wouldn't be able to get it all in a picture! Haha

I definitely felt the love this Christmas. I'm truly blessed. :)

It's The Little Things

It's been over a month since I blogged... you can tell it's the end of the semester. I'll spare you the details, but I will say that I feel like I've been running a race and I can just now see the finish line. I'm winded and weary, but it's so close I can taste it-- yet far enough I have to keep one foot in front of the other.
Seriously I have been working on something every day. And that something is usually studying for a big test, preparing for a big presentation, practicing for a final speech, pounding out news articles or planning out the baby shower I'm hosting this weekend. Usually I have a few days in between deadlines and assignments, but these last two weeks have been nuts. Thank goodness my math test is over and I can relax the rest of the day. It feels like the first time I've come up for air in a while. :/

I've become a work-horse lately, just pounding it out. And I've become so focused on the next task at hand I feel like I've rarely had time to enjoy the beautiful time of year it is. So today I took a look around and picked out a few things that are currently making me happy.

Number 1 on my happiness list is me and Jason's first Christmas tree. On family night we broke out the tree, unwrapped the ribbon and hung up some lights. Jason spotted this little tree among the chaos of Black Friday for an incredible price so we added it to our shopping and got the heck outta Target. Saturday after an Outback dinner with the fam, Jace and I went on a little date to Tai Pan where we got a few boxes of sparklies for the tree. I had a lot of Tai Pan decor from the after-Christmas sale last year, so seriously we spent like a third of what we had budgeted for Christmas decorating. More money for presents right??!

I used teal, purple and silver in our tree-- my favorite color combination for Winter lately. I have really thick, purple ribbon and big silver ornaments that are so sparkly that when you turn on the lights the glitter illuminates the entire tree. Jason was so great when we put it up. He designated himself as the tree setter-upper and branch separator, then he put the little hangers on each ornament, leaving the actual decorating to me. He must have known it would be a more peaceful process that way. :)
He's said three or four times as he goes up the stairs, "Wow babe our tree is so cool!" It's cute that he takes that much pride in it.

So last night my friend Leana took me to see Handle's Messiah. It was a beautiful concert to start off the Christmas season in the right way. Usually we get ice cream after these kind of things, but it was unusually cold, so we locked elbows and scurried to our cars. Usually I stay indoors when it gets colder than 50, haha yeah right, but I was excited to wear my new Kenneth Cole coat-- one of those fancy long ones that you feel you can't wear unless you're going somewhere special... with shiny black buttons and a thick belt to cinch around my waist. I got the black one, but it looks a lot like the one in this pic-- wool and so warm! Macy's had an 80% sale or something last winter and with a Christmas gift card I had I scored this $325 coat for... well, a whole lot less. :) You've gotta love buys like that!

So me and my sister-in-laws have started a monthly ladies night that is going surprisingly well considering two of us live in St. George and four of us live in Las Vegas. Sheridon and I decided we don't get to spend much time just getting to know our sisters when we're with them, so we started doing a craft/get-together in alternating states every other month.

In November we went to Melissa's for lunch where we got to know each other better as we tied quilts for Becky's soon-to-come baby. Since we knew we'd never get our husbands to the theater for Breaking Dawn, (just kidding Jason actually wants to see it can you believe it??) we left them with the kids and headed to one of the casinos--so weird to go through a casino to see a movie-- to line up for Breaking Dawn. Katie literally laughed out loud at the Honeymoon scene, and she was easily the loudest person in the theater. Haha thanks Katie. You made a totally awkward moment much easier to see. ;)

Anyways, this weekend everyone's coming up to St. George. We've never had the whole Tippetts fam come to US, so it'll be so good to have them here. Hopefully it becomes a regular thing! ;)

So as lame as this sounds, my shampoo has totally brought happiness into my life lately. I strayed from my usual Matrix to try Organix brazilian keratin therapy, and I love it. The coconut oil turns my shower into Tahiti. :) Seriously every time I pop upen the bottle Jason ooohs and awws over it. What can I say, coconut smells transform my day! ;) I recently got an evergreen and sugar cookie scentsy bar, so even in the desert we feel a bit like Christmas.

Oooh you wanna know what else is heaven on earth? Our room was getting so stuffy and hot all the time that I pulled open a window and have pretty much just left it that way for weeks. The fresh night air and the evergreen scentsy make me feel like I'm sleeping in a forest, not a barren desert. I love waking up in the middle of the night just a teensy bit cold, then snuggling up to my hubby under the comforter... I don't know why I like that so much. Probably because it's so surprising to me that we can keep windows open in December. I love it.

On that same note, my mom had me take this big blossoming flower pot of hers when the cold set in up north, so I've been taking care of it ever since. It started on my back patio, but it was so gorgeous I set it out front where our pumpkins once were. Every day I arrive home to its' bright red flowers happy as ever, despite the winter weather. Plants really do boost your mood.

So on Saturday I got my first Bountiful Basket. If you don't know what that is, click here to read my article all about it. :) I figured now was as good a time as ever, since all those holiday treats really do a number on ya. After twenty minutes or so I was done 'shopping' and the fridge was fully stocked with better treats like blackberries, kiwis, pineapple, tomatoes and lettuce. I was curious, though, if my $15 was really as great a deal as everyone says. Because after all, I don't always buy radishes, pears and cucumber. So I headed off to Walmart to compare prices, and man was I pleased. To hear about my savings, check out my link above. It's nice to have healthy options during one of the unhealthiest months of the year, as well as a few more options for dinner. :)

It's really the little things that make us happy isn't it?

Moving with the Cheese

Jace and I have been reflecting a lot.

We reflect on work, on friends, on school, on church, on family, on life, on change. We feel like we're moving on to the next stage of our life- graduating to a bigger stage, a better stage. You know those times when you look back on certain stages of life and wonder how you made it through? You wonder how you got there and why you stayed there so long? You realize that now, completely removed from the situation that life is so much brighter on this side of the bridge. That you're so much happier now than then, although in the moment you felt completely content.

I feel that way about a lot of things lately.

I know that I'm happier when I'm doing what's right. And sometimes doing what's right is as simple as attending all three hours of church, even though three hours can be so painful at times. I've just gotta do it. Heavenly Father knows what we can handle right? Well that means He also knows what is difficult for us, which means when He sees us really trying at something that he knows we struggle with so much, He's bound to bless us for our effort and our faith. And that's why I passed my math test on Monday- I'm convinced. Believe me I didn't know my stuff that well. :)

I know I'm happier when I'm going to school. Education is so important to me. Seriously I get a high planning out next semester's classes. I'm literally counting down the days until I can sign up for my excellent spring semester schedule. Only Tuesdays and Thursdays baby! But really, I feel like I'm doing something really important for myself right now. When I was working as an optician a year ago I felt a sense of accomplishment because I was bringing in great paychecks every other week, but it really only felt like material happiness. You know, hitting NY&Co sales on my days off, saving up for vacations with my then-fiance, paying another phone bill, that kind of thing. There wasn't much long-term accomplishment like I feel when I go to school. I'm investing in my future at school. And it feels so good to do so.

I know I'm happier when I'm writing. I've been on the newspaper staff for so long that the year I took off school was so absent of purpose, because the only thing I was writing was my blog. That's probably why I threw myself into it so wholeheartedly! But as a reporter for the SUN News I have so much more purpose. The thing I really love to do and feel like I'm good at doing is more than a hobby, it's a career path, and according to my producer Carson a scholarship opportunity that he said, "you should definitely look into."

Everytime I come into the newsroom he praises my stories. My style, my leads, my interviews- everything. I ran into the professor that edits our articles yesterday and he was such a sweetheart telling me the same kind of stuff Carson does, and with specific examples in my stories. (That's impressive because he reads a lot of stories) As a blue personality it is so important to me to be recognized and appreciated and I feel so valued at SUN News. Then when Carson convinced me to take a camera and start working on video a girl on the staff volunteered her Halloween night to help me learn the ropes. They are so welcoming and so kind to me. What a difference from past newsrooms. I can't even tell you the difference between SUN News and the Dixie Sun (that I spend two years at). I love being a part of SUN News.

I know I'm happier when I'm around friends and family. You don't realize how lonely you are until you return home to the loving arms of those that really care about you. Even in St. G we're around family a lot. My family came down two weekends ago and spent a good amount of time with us, and we've been down to Vegas quite a bit lately. We've been getting to know Ben and Sheridon a lot better too. They'll come stay with us, then we'll go stay with them, whatever is best. You take advantage of those relationships, I decided, until you're so far that a relationship can barely exist. The same is true with friends, and that leads me to my next point.

I know I'm happier in St. George. NC is beautiful and NJ was great, but I am in love with this little town. And it feels more like home now, now that I've started a family and a home of my own. I want to raise kids here. In a smaller town, in a warm town, in a generally safe town. And you can't beat the great housing prices here on gorgeous southwest-style homes. I heard it snowed in northern Utah today. In southern Utah Larissa and I were considering a trip to the pool today. Just sayin. :) I'm happier in St. George.

I know I'm happier with Jason's new job. It has been such a blessing to us. Summer sales jobs are hit or miss for sure, and the summer as a newly married couple just so happened to be the miss. That comes with that line of work and I'm okay with the high-risk those jobs entail, but there are certain things we're not okay with anymore. Luckily we were able to find an option that offers the same benefits for less risk, I guess you could say. It will grant us greater stability, better opportunity and even increased income- exactly what we need for the next stage of our lives. We can sever destructive relationships, take control of our lives and start anew. I see such a difference in him now than what I saw this summer. His fire is back and we attribute that to the recognition and appreciation he's receiving now. He has room to grow and a real voice, that's valued.

We call it moving with the cheese. If you've read the awesome book Who Moved My Cheese? you'd catch my drift. We read it together in NC; it's a tiny little one that's written like a children's book, but with content so inspiring it's won all kinds of awards. Anyways. It's about four little mice that see the world differently. Hem and Haw don't like change. They're comfortable with where they are and how they're doing things that they refuse to see the world any other way. Sniff and Scurry, on the other hand, understand a very important concept- that when the cheese moves, it is critical to move with the cheese. In other words, change isn't a bad thing. It can be a very good thing that eventually leads you to even bigger and better cheese than before. If you're willing to see it.

I digress.

My point is that I'm happier now, where I'm at. Physically, spiritually, emotionally- all that good stuff. Life's brighter on this side of the bridge and together Jason and I are at a better stage in life. And hopefully over the next few years it will only get better. :)

Walk for Lucas

The same weekend Jason and I volunteered for the St. George Marathon, we drove down to Vegas to participate in the annual Buddy Walk in honor of sweet Lucas we lost a few months ago.

The guys stayed home so Deb, Katie, Sheridon, Melissa, Becky and I took the kids and headed to the park.

Deb bought t-shirts for everyone and proceeds were donated to the National Society of Down Syndrome Children.

Wyatt was so good, both on the walk and during pictures afterwards. During pictures he grabbed my hand and started pulling me toward the playground. "Shannon come on!" Cute little guy.

The walk wasn't long- just around the park, but there were so many people, so many teams walking in memory of lost loved ones.

I know we were all thinking about Lucas that day. Some of us think about Lucas every day.

We miss his sweet spirit.

Fall in Dixie

One morning as I was headed off to school I spotted these big beautiful bushes transformed completely over night. What had been just a boring green bush was now so gorgeous- entirely covered in purple blossoms.

Fall is in the air!

I took Ollie for a walk as soon as I got home to see for myself the beautiful changes fall had brought our neighborhood.

It wasn't much, everything was still pretty green and lush, or as lush as a desert can be. But it was one of those much needed walks, not the kind where you take the dog out and tap your foot impatiently until he finally does his business, but rather one of those walks where you, well... stop and smell the bushes.

;)

I did find some leaves, turned golden by the effects of the seasons, but hidden and found in small increments.

Ollie needs another haircut. He looks like a scruffy little scotty dog. :)

It's so different here than up north where I'm used to. There the seasons change and there's an abrupt shift in the air- no doubt that winter's here and here to stay. But here things are different. Last week we got some rain and just about broke out the sweaters, but now we're back in the 80's.

It's Fall in Dixie with little change in the air, purple blossoms and a bit of rain.

Call me crazy, but that's just how I like it.    :)

STG Marathon 2011

Last weekend was one of those weekends you live for- complete with food, friends and family. In addition to the annual Buddy Walk in Las Vegas, General Conference and "Ladies Night" with my sister in laws, I volunteered for the St. George Marathon and had a blast doing it.

Not many things are worth a 4 a.m. wake-up call, but the sunrise we saw as the runners began their race made little to no sleep 100% worth it.

7,500 runners passed by our aid station at mile marker 5.

Jason, Larissa and our friends Leana and Lyndsay were sweet enough to join me. Together we sliced oranges and handed out half a million water cups.

Then we picked up half a million water cups. :)

When we signed up to volunteer, we had no idea we'd be working with the young men and women of a Washington Ward.

When I interviewed a few of the leaders I learned the ward has been helping out at the Marathon for 25 years!

When our volunteer 'shift' was over we headed into the heart of town to watch the first thousand runners cross the finish line.

Runners held hands, carried children and collapsed across the finish line. At one point Jason turned to me and said, "This might sound lame, but everytime someone crosses that line I almost get choked up." It wasn't lame though, because I felt the same.

You feel attached to them somehow, as if the service you gave them drew you closer. Then you find yourself feeling for every last runner. It's an experience I wouldn't take back. Even if it did mean six more hours of sleep. ;)
